5 Tips to Get Writing Now
Last Saturday, Cheryl and I got video taped for GuruTube.net. I had a great time! I have to admit, though, I was nervous. I was going to have a video clip on the same site as Guy Kawasaki and MC Hammer! (Our videos will be posted in a few weeks.)
For the Breakfast Blogging Club, I presented on 5 Tips to Get Writing Now.
Tip 1: List of 20
On a piece of paper, list from 1 through 20. Set a timer for 3 minutes. With a blog topic in mind, write as fast as you can.
The purpose of this exercise is to generate ideas.
Tip 2: Mind Mapping
Pick one idea from your List of 20, and place it in the center of a blank page. Then read how to use mind mapping in the post, “What Are You Passionate About?”
The purpose of this exercise is to expand upon an idea.
Tip 3: The Doorway In…
Each of us has a doorway into our writing, where we can write freely.
Imagine your perfect day. And in your perfect day imagine your perfect moment. Now in your perfect moment, use your senses to really put yourself there.
-
What do you see?
-
What do you hear?
-
What do you feel, emotionally and physically?
-
What do you smell?
-
What do you taste?
Now compose a first sentence in your mind, focusing in one or two senses. Then, write that sentence.
Write a paragraph, using your doorway in, to spark your blog post or article.
The purpose of this exercise is to get into your body and organically communicate your wisdom and knowledge.
Tip 4: Dialogue with the Dragon
Imagine you’re sitting in a cave and facing your worst fear embodied in a dragon. (Or another monster of your choosing.)
Ask this dragon questions:
-
What would you like from me?
-
What is your purpose for being here?
-
What is your intended positive outcome?
Tell the dragon:
-
What you want from it.
-
What your intended positive outcome is for your writing.
-
How your dragon can better serve you.
The purpose of this exercise is to uncover the hidden part of you that could be holding you back from your full potential.
Tip 5: The Truth is…
List on your paper the numbers 1 through 10. Write the phrase: “The truth is…” Then complete the sentence.
Do this ten more times.
The purpose of this exercise is to get to the heart of the matter.
Happy Writing and Blogging!

OMG! Great post, Beth. I mean, I was sitting right next to you as you were writing this, and it turned out fantastic!
Very helpful for my writing efforts. And that dragon…ooh! He ain’t ‘Puff’ in my mind.
I think many people will get a ton of value from this post. You really do care about writers!
Hey, Beth, it’s another of the Beths! This is really good — & timely. I’m getting geared up to write a blog (at last!), & have dragons like so many others. This is really good advice for getting started & blowing past the dragon! Thanks for sharing it.
Thanks Cheryl and Beth.
Beth, good luck with your writing your blog post! When you blow past the dragon, don’t forget to wave!
Cheryl, I’m curious to see what your conversation with your “not-Puff” will be like! And yes, I really do care about writers. I am one too!
